Storybook presentation

November 12, 2008 - Leave a Response

We managed to get out book before the deadline and also showed our tutor, Jing, a few days ago. Well, we couldn’t fulfil our wish to make the book interactive as there was really a limitation at the printer’s because we already had much of a problem just to get the book printed… But all went well and I guess what we already have will be more than enough to suffice. Jing felt that the book was alright, with a few mistakes here and there… but I hope it won’t affect our grades much. We put in a lot of effort! Looking at the other groups’ presentations was enjoyable too… I think all of us are excellent as all of us can actually produce a full children’s storybook in such a short time… We should sell all of our books and earn money! Haha!

This project has really been an enjoyable, but at the same time a very taxing experience for me, especially being the person who does the main drawing, it really took up a lot of my time. I guess I did learn quite a number of skills and stuff… So I guess, you gain some, you lose some!

Storybook 5

November 12, 2008 - Leave a Response

Did some of the integration with Kristal, had to put in the backgrounds, narration and characters together. Then, our group went on the finalise the other pages with the other group members so that we can spend for printing. Did up the final design for the cover page, the contents and the glossary. Kristal did the font choosing and we had to bleed our pages so as to prevent any printing errors when we spend to the printer (like risking them cutting off our work so the spanning will look very awful) Sending for printing soon!

Storybook 4

November 3, 2008 - Leave a Response

Did the pencil drawings of the characters. I drew them in seperate entitites so as to facilitate better scanning. The was really a pain trying to do the scanning and live trace of 20 pages… Because I don’t have a tablet! Couldn’t draw the rabbits on the spot… Filled them up with live paint. Waitinf for integration with the background.

Storybook – 3

November 1, 2008 - Leave a Response

Drew the whole draft of the story book. Had to add in the missing parts to link up the story at some pages. Showed the draft to the group. Our group then finalizes the storyline:

Storybook – 2

October 28, 2008 - Leave a Response

We went back to sch during deepavali to discuss and develop our story further. We drew the first draft of the book on MM’s sketch book. We then finalised our book with the follow story line. Will have to draw a 2nd draft to show the group members.

Final project – Storybook

October 26, 2008 - Leave a Response

Our group had a meeting to discuss about the project. We have settled on the type of story, dimensions, colors, and the grid.

We settled on a story which talks about a little bunny which misintepret what he sees on a television show and goes on an adventure to find for treasure, in which in the end stole the carrot bank key which made the town go in chaos. Then he learns his lesson and returns the key, and at the end of the story, we teach the reader (or the child reading it) that stealing is wrong! In fact the television was showing a hero stealing a key so as to save a princess!

We came out with half of the story line out, by writing what we are going to draw for each page.

We analysed different kinds of story books. Most of us borrowed story books from libraries and analysed the different styles in story books. We decided on using pastel colors, with some spanning pages. Also, we forgo the idea of having borders as we felt a full page color will make the book more attractive. We decided on the dimension of 8.4 x 9 inches (a failed attempt trying to follow the golden ratio).

The basic story line goes like this:

Page 1
Introduction of Bunni

Page 2
Con’t from Page 1, he’s sprawled out with his butt facing the reader, watching
The Bunninja show. The TV antannae have the narration of the show in between them.

Page 3
He switches the TV off, goes to his room and rummages through his drawer.
Pic: Him rummaging, tail to the reader, through his drawers.

Page 4
He turns into…. BUNNINJA!

Page 5
Bunninja tells his mother he’s going on an adventure.

Page 6
Him hopping around the neighbourhood, Bunninja style.

Page 7
He hops past a house (after a few, in the text) and finds The Key! (Shaped as The Carrot of Destiny).

Page 8
He hops back home.

Page 9
Next day, in the kitchen, BunnyMommy hears chaos outside the detachable windows.
People are running around in horror because of the lost key to the Carrot Bank.

Page 10
Bunninja then declares he’s going on his next adventure. His mother questions him.

Page 11
She explains his mistake to him. He’s regretful. They return the key.

BunnyMommy issues punishment of no TV. XD

Gonna meet again to develop the book futher.

Assignment 6

October 17, 2008 - Leave a Response

We actually selected posters from magazine ads because I think lesser people will do on them and they have an different aspect in terms of the way the design is made.

We choose this picture as a good ad because it was very classy and had a great use of colors on the ad. The red emphasises the model in the ad, in which will lead the reader’s eyes to the bag and shoes, which are the apparel this particular brand actually endorses. The model also leads the reader to the brand name.

I really find this ad very funny. It’s like we do not notice this add most of the time because the purpose of it is already… quite wrong. Anyways, the background is really a bad one because it conflicts with the foreground. There’s no depth in the picture and the font and the placement of words are random and the attempted color combinations are too much and not really legible.

Assignment 5 – Color experimentation

October 14, 2008 - Leave a Response

(Click on the picture for a full size view of the image)

After playing around with the color wheel (which took me quite sometime to get hold of it) I have actually made up a few color possible color schemes that I can use with the card. The bottom right hand thumbprint of the picture is the original one. I have tried color styles such as single shades, testing with hues and contrasting colors. I have also tried changing only the background of the orginal image to see which would be the most suitable background of the card. I choose the last thumb in the end still because it blends in with the color with the glow of the angel, and it is a less commonly used color, as commented by my tutor. (: There wasn’t really any comments on the card… Well, I would really want to send this card out to my friends during this christmas! (:

Assignment 5 – Prototype

October 11, 2008 - Leave a Response

This is the prototype for the Christmas card, after coloring in illustrator. The image above is the cover of the card.

This will be the back! I replaced the thing that the angles are holding to bells gives a very serenic feeling and this it goes well with the quote of bringing “you peace furthermore”.

I will blog about our critique session again tomorrow. I’m still quite confused about making the color schemes. Will have to consult our tutor on it… and look at how my peers do them. When I know I’m doing it correctly… I’ll post it up again. (:

Assignment 5 – Roughs

October 9, 2008 - Leave a Response

For assignment five, we were asked to design Christmas cards! Being a festive person, I actually drew out a few designs on my sketchbook to choose from. The first one I drew on was this picture above. It’s supposed to be an angle placing the star on the Christmas tree. Angels are a symbol of blessing, and that’s the kind of feel I want to bring out from this picture. I’m actually choosing this rough as it gives a distinct feel compared to my other roughs… because my remaining three roughs are all about Santa… which is kind of mediocre.

The second one is about a child secretly waiting for Santa to come, but actually fell asleep… and missed Santa’s arrival! When Santa arrives… He secretly puts the present below the Christmas tree. Kind of complicated… with all the details and stuff. Thus I didn’t really want to choose this rough because complication might fuzz out the meaning of the card

This rough is actually comical. Trying to achieve and convey a cheeky message (:
I didn’t choose this one because I wouldn’t have much room to use colors and experiment with them. I really like this idea the best, though!

This is definitely one common idea often used by Christmas Cards! I just wanted to draw this because this would be a design that everyone can be identified with along with Christmas.

I really had a lot of fun trying to draw all this roughs! Coloring will be another challenge!
